Learn for Life Lanka

Learn for Life Lanka creates and deploys programmes for the development of life skills. Our approach is two fold; the first is that we provide  social and emotional learning (SEL) that would benefit young people both academically and socially.

We are also committed to encouraging students to explore diverse career choices through exposure to corporate and social organizations in Sri Lanka.

What Motivates Us

We strongly believe that all Sri Lankan children should be equipped with the skills and mindset that would enable them to flourish in school and in life.

However, because there are huge disparities in the education offered at urban and rural schools and a curriculum that does not meet the needs of the modern workplace, there are high dropout rates and discontentment amongst the youth.

Students also struggle with issues such as depression, stress, anxiety, bullying and violence – issues that often go unvoiced, and therefore prevent them from living up to the best versions of themselves.

39%

of students have reported being bullied at least once in the past 30 days.*

44%

of students aged 13-17 were involved in a fight at least once in the last 12 months.*

80.4%

of students in a study conducted in 2017 had experienced corporal punishment at least once in the previous term at school.*

How will SEL help?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) encourages the holistic development of young people.

Research has consistently shown that people with strong social and emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially.

Schools that have adopted SEL have seen improvements in students’ academic performance, the students have better attitudes, there is a reduction in bullying, and the schools have lower dropout rates.  SEL helps children develop healthy relationships and empathize with people of different ethnicities and social backgrounds – skills that matter in a country that is multi-ethnic and multi-religious, with great socio-economic differences.
